Bullying in the Workplace’ in the Czech Republic | SelectShow> |
---|---|
Authors: Cakirpaloglu, P., Šmahaj, J., Dobešová Cakirpaloglu, S., Zielina, M. The following text summarizes the contents of the monograph ‘Bullying in the Workplace’ in the Czech Republic: Theory, Work is a very important dimension in the life of contemporary people. Performance enhancement concerns not only the use of increasingly sophisticated tools, but also people who are involved in the labor process. As a result, efficiency, productivity and profit are rising. This trend, however, has a dark side in form of negative manifestations among the employees (mobbing) and the leadership (bossing) at the workplace. The introduction of the theoretical part defines the intention of the authors and the aim of the publication. In the first chapter a list of alternative concepts related to workplace bullying are presented. The first chapter discusses the history of the main concept of mobbing / bullying in the workplace. The phenomenon itself has been described in contemporary literature through different definitions or terms (eg. Work trauma work, workplace harassment, offensive / emotional abuse, bullying, etc.). It outlines the basic context of the development of this term, which is mainly associated with the following authors: Brodsky (1976), Olweus (1973) and later with one of the most important pioneers in the research of workplace bullying Leymann (1995a), who worked in Sweden. He used the term mobbing to describe similar cases of hostile behavior in the workplace. At the same time, we use this term and its concept within the theoretical anchorage of the empirical part. Additionally the chapter outlines the development of the research of workplace bullying over the past 20 years. Mobbing has become a very hot topic worldwide. Currently a number of ambiguous views are linked to this problem. Research devoted to mobbing shows that there is no working area where this phenomenon has not occurred. However, it is evident that there are workplaces or areas where psychological terror occurs frequently. It is necessary to consider the differences in the methodology of the different studies as well as the cultural variables of individual countries. Presented data are divided into foreign and domestic studies. The second chapter refers about the main actors of mobbing (the aggressor, the victim and bystanders), including the definition of their typical socio-demographic characteristics (sex, age, job position, and sector). These findings have been associated with the results of the research carried out in the Czech Republic. After that almost didactic definition follows a text that has not gained literary attention. These are the targets, forms and phases of workplace bullying. Mobbing as a multi-level process is an extremely complexed, long-terming and escalating phenomenon. Workplace bullying may appear in various forms, whose identification and operationalization are commonly used questionnaire methods, for instance the use of the Negative Acts Questionnaire NAQ-R allows behavioral and self-evaluation measurement. The end of the chapter introduces the readers to the four phases of mobbing according to Leymann (1995b) as well as alternative theoretical framework phases of workplace bullying. We are aware that the definition of the objectives of workplace bullying requires an understanding of many assumptions involved in the labor process, while mobbing typically appears as a way of realization of the subjective, group and organizational goals. That is why we have included in this section topics such as expulsion of the employee, satisfaction of persons destructive tendencies, rewards and benefits. The fourth chapter presents the causes and consequences of workplace bullying, which is necessary to disclose in the context of the effect of the individual, group, organizational and social factors. With the questions of prevention of workplace bullying being dealt with in the fifth chapter. In recent years, more and more organizations are paying attention to preventive measures in the fight against workplace bullying; however, we would like to point out the absence of a sufficient number of relevant researches of organizational policies and practices against aggression in the workplace. In this context, it is clear that the choice of individual preventive measures should be meaningful, logical and consistently implemented. However, a precondition for effective prevention is the support not only from management but also from ordinary employees in terms of establishing and maintaining optimal professional, interpersonal and motivational assumptions that would facilitate the achievement of the organizational and individual goals. In the sixth and final chapter of the theoretical part Mobbing and the Law, we notice that the Czech Republic still lacks a law to protect victims of workplace bullying and also that the professional community in the Czech Republic only began to start intensively dealing with bullying in the workplace twenty years after most other countries. The aim of this section was to provide an overview of possible solutions to workplace bullying within the framework of current legislation. The following empirical part of the monograph presents the problem, the hypotheses, the research objectives, methodological design and the main results of the statistical relationships related to workplace bullying in the Czech Republic. These topics reflect the lack of knowledge of the prevalence of workplace bullying in the public, private and non-profit sectors with respect to sociodemographic indicators in a large number of employees. Here we follow up on foreign comparative studies of workplace bullying in all sectors of employment, although estimates of the prevalence of this negative phenomenon vary (eg. Lutgen-Sandvik et al., 2007; Tsuno et al., 2010; Eurofound 2015). Our other identical result, in accordance with the international studies, is the confirmation of the negative influences that affect long-term workplace bullying on the mental state of the victim. There was a lack of similar empirical findings in the previous studies of mobbing in the Czech Republic including an insight on this issue with respect to the gender, age, education, job position and other sociodemographic indicators of the victims. Exactly these components were identified when formulating the basic objective of the planned research of workplace bullying in the Czech Republic. The seventh chapter defines the research problem in the context of descriptive and relational analysis of the empirical results. Part of the chapter is a brief overview of the specific research goals, objectives and hypotheses. Following research design emphasize on the quantitative nature of the research. The chapter consists of a brief overview of the advantages and disadvantages of the electronic and paper data collection especially in the context of workplace bullying research, which partly compensates the combination of both methods. The criteria for selecting parametric statistics, criteria for data processing and analysis follow. The next chapter presents the questionnaire methods used. Given the underlying objective of the empirical study we chose reliable and valid questionnaires, which also provide a comparison of the results with similar surveys at home and abroad. For the measurement of workplace bullying a Czech translation of the revised questionnaire of negative acts (NAQ-R) was used, SUPSO scale for measuring the mental condition and a series of psychological characteristics and as well our own designed anamnestic questionnaire. Due to the fact that we have managed to obtain the consent of the authors to use the NAQ-R, the eight chapter is devoted to its psychometric indicators, namely the achieved reliability, validity and the factor composition of the Czech version of this method. The following chapter presents the results with respect to the specified statistical criteria for the interpretation of the research findings. The basic sample (N = 7103) were citizens of the Czech Republic, aged 18-68 years, who at the time of data collection were employed, or specified any alternative to the current social status and at the same time they were not unemployed or on maternity / parental leave for more than 6 months. From this point of view, it was a homogeneous set of employed respondents. A descriptive analysis of the tenth chapter deals with the problem of the empirical estimation of the prevalence of mobbing in the Czech Republic when using the questionnaire NAQ-R. Part of the presented estimate of the prevalence of mobbing are structured findings of incidence of workplace bullying with respect to the gender and employment sector of the employees including the territorial organization of the Czech Republic. These findings are also enriched in three ways and two measurement criteria of workplace bullying. Following analysis of partial forms of bullying in the workplace through the lens of the gender and type of workers’ organization. The initial problem was to answer the question whether mobbing is a heterogeneous phenomenon, or is it a specific manifestation varying with respect to the gender or employment sector of the victims? Next we verify on the local group employees the validity of the foreign findings of an increasing anxiety and depression and a parallel decline in the feeling of the subjective well-being and the overall mental fitness during exposure to long term mobbing. Through the SUPSO questionnaire, which relevantly captures selected components of the mental condition, the expectations were confirmed. In addition to the significance of the measurement connections we added an additional interpretive dimension called substantive significance of the effect in terms of the practical impact of workplace bullying as an independent variable on the selected states of the psyche (the dependent variable). The final elevanth chapter presents the results of measurements of two levels of mobbing: behavioral manifestations of the negative behavior and the subjective perception of victims of mobbing. In this context, we introduce a combined measurement of mobbing, which gently distinguishes the core of the bullied employees and by this reduces the empirical overestimation or underestimation of the incidence of workplace bullying in the Czech Republic. Rorschach method: Integrative approach to interpretation | SelectShow> |
---|---|
Author: Martin Lečbych Summary: We focuse on one of the most influential psychodiagnostic tool – Rorschach method. Our aim is to provide integrated overview of this method. This book is divided to three main chapters. In the first part we put attention on perceptual cognitive process. We are trying to link the theory of the neuropsychology, neurobiology and modern cognitive theory with selected aspects of Rorschach method. From a practical point of view, we focus on reality testing and integration and organization of sensory experience. We place emphasis on theory of attention and executive control (Posner & Raichle, 1994, 1998) and clasification of attention functions created by Sbordone and Long (1998). In the second part we discuss relationship between emotion and cognition. We attend to particular theories that are devoted to their interdependence. Our work is most influenced by Damasio theory and theory of Current Concerns. We try to summarize possibilities in diagnostics of affective style, emotional impact on the processes of interpretation, we discuss also issues about Alexithymia. The last part of our work is focused on interpersonal relationship. In this part we use the ideas of Psychoanalysis, Self psychology, Ego psychology and theory of Attachment and object relationship. We present the possibilities of multiple psychodynamic scales in the diagnostic of object relationship. We try to look at Rorschach method as diverse tool with many possibilities. Quality interpretation, in our opinion, requires an understanding of many theories which are related to the areas of Rorschach diagnostic. Relying only on one perspective we find to be dangerous. For these reasons, we try to emphasize the integrative position and present one of the possible expamles of integrative concept. Citation: Lečbych, M. (2013). Author: Martin Lečbych Summary: Main aim of this publication is to provide the essentials and more recent scientific knowledge relating to the method of Hand test, created by Edwin E. Wagner. In our publication we try to summarize and elaborate themes connected with test application in a different clinical and non-clinical groups. We focus on the psychometric properties of Hand test and methodological issues with the intention to support research using this method in our country. We have tried to build up on the original papers and research studies that have been published in peer-revied and impacted scientific journals. We have tried to design our publication as a broader overview study, which has also meaning for application of scientific knowledge in practice. When we studied research articles with Hand test and applied this method in clinical practice, we were surprised how many interesting applications of the Hand test can be detected. We belief that use of this method goes beyond simply assessing of acting-out and aggressive tendencies, but could be successfully applied to a diverse diagnostic questions. In our publication we focus not only on assessment of acting-out tendencies, we focus also on assessment of selected aspect of main psychical disorders, cognitive functions, posttraumatic states, assessment of psychosomatic aspects, mental retardation, assessment of themes connected with school psychology and with traffic psychology.
